9 Dec 2009 My name is Fabiola Quishpe and I’m from a village called Apahua, high in the Ecuadorean Andes. I work with my local community to improve our village’s food security, cultivate indigenous varieties of seeds and preserve the Andean grasslands so we have better access to water to irrigate our crops.Fabiola Quishpe’s diary: I have hopeI am here at the Copenhagen climate summit as part of Progressio’s delegation where I will be observing the negotiations. I hope to meet other people working on climate change and learn from them too. I only arrived in Copenhagen yesterday. The plane journey was a little bit difficult. First, we needed a visa. We handed over all the documents and the photos but they couldn’t accept the photo because I was wearing my hat! In Ecuador women don’t take their hats off very often in public and so it was difficult to get a photograph they would accept. So I had to get another photo without my hat instead. But it was fine in the end. This was only the second time I have been on a plane in my life. It was fine. The first time I went on a plane I flew to Colombia. I met people there and I spoke to them about water issues, the grasslands in the Andes and access to food. I stayed almost a week. This plane journey was much longer, though. It’s very cold here – much colder than in Ecuador at the moment. Right now it’s summer time, but where I live at an altitude of 4000m in the mountains, that means it’s the rainy season. This is my first visit to Europe. It is so different from Ecuador. Here at this conference everyone is very interested in climate change. In Ecuador some people are being affected by climate change and they know about it, but some people aren’t and they don’t know what it is. So far, it’s been quite an experience. There are so many people. The technology here is different, the conference centre is very big, there are hundreds of desks and computers and everything’s so well organised. I believe there will be a strong climate change agreement here at Copenhagen. I have hope. |
