Do I need to pay?

 

International Citizen Service (ICS) will be largely funded by the Government but the younger volunteers (aged 18-22) who can afford to will be required to make a financial contribution depending on their income level.  This is to help ensure that a wide spectrum of people from all backgrounds can participate.

We have designed a three tier contribution system for ICS participants linked to your household income.

Don’t be daunted by this. You’ll receive training and support to fundraise for the costs. Not only will fundraising help cover your costs, it’s also a fun way to help raise awareness of development issues, a great opportunity to involve your faith community in your efforts, and develop valuable fundraising, organisation and communication skills. Even if you don’t have to pay to participate in ICS, we encourage you to have a go at raising funds so you can also get involved and help raise money toward the development projects you and others will be working on. 

Contribution levels are as follows:

Tier 1: Household income over £40,000 per year – £2,000

Tier 2: Household income between £25,000-£40,000 per year – £1,000

Tier 3: Household income less than £25,000 per year – £0

In your application, you’ll need to declare the income of the household on which you depend. If you’re dependent on parents/carers (i.e. you rely on their income to fully or partially support you) the household income is the total pre-tax household income for the last tax year – so it includes your parents’ / carers’ income as well as any income you have yourself.  Otherwise if you’re financially independent, your household income is your own pre-tax income for the last tax year. 

This information must be declared honestly and you may be required to provide evidence to back up the information you have given us before you go overseas.

What do the costs cover? 

Regardless of how much you pay, you will be provided with:

  • Flights
  • Visas
  • Travel and Medical insurance
  • Medication & vaccines
  • Food and accommodation
  • Local allowance
  • In-country transport
  • Training in the UK and overseas
  • Full support throughout the whole programme

How do I get help to fundraise?

After your application has been accepted, you’ll be provided with a range of ideas, guides and materials on the web to get you started. During your pre-departure training you’ll also get more ideas on fundraising. You’ll also be able to discuss fundraising ideas and formulate fundraising plans with other volunteers. All of this should set you up to hit your target before you go overseas.
