ICS Empower Peru

Despite its Inca inheritance, Peru’s indigenous population is often excluded from power. Peru is a country rich in natural resources, but this wealth is not available to the majority of people. Progressio has been working in Peru for over 30 years, helping local organisations advocate for this reality to change.

The ICS Empower projects in Peru are all based with local community organisations in a poor neighbourhood on the outskirts of Lima, reaching out particularly to those living in poverty and exclusion. You could be working with local volunteers in a parish organisation supporting and motivating them in addressing the needs of the elderly, through bringing new ideas and innovations to their programme of activities. You might find yourself using your English language skills to assist teachers to improve teaching of English to children and teenagers in the local school, developing new learning resources, sharing different educational techniques and helping set up new activities to motivate students. You could be supporting teachers running sports activities, improving children’s IT skills or raising awareness of Human Rights.  

 
Whether you feel you have a lot or little to share, you will certainly develop new skills through varied activities and working with local people, and contribute to lasting change. There will be plenty of opportunities to be creative and use your initiative. As you will be part of a diverse group, you will all have different skills, experiences and interests which you can use as a team to have a real impact.

This is also a fantastic opportunity to learn some Spanish. If you already speak Spanish then we may ask you to use these skills to help the group communicate and engage with the local community more easily.
